Momo Japanese and Korean Restaurant: Affordable South Winnipeg Dining

Whenever I’m in the mood for reasonably priced Japanese and Korean food in South Winnipeg, my go-to choice is Momo Japanese and Korean restaurant, located at 40-2855 Pembina Hwy. While not the biggest establishment, Momo’s cozy atmosphere adds to the overall dining experience.

One dish that I always find myself ordering is the Soon Tofu Chigae, a delightful Korean specialty. This spicy soft tofu soup is prepared with green onions, onions, and eggs, and you can choose to have it with seafood or pork. The soup strikes a perfect balance of flavours, offering just the right amount of kick. Additionally, it comes with a small bowl of rice and three side dishes, typically featuring potatoes, bean sprouts, and kimchi, which complement the main dish perfectly.

Now, let’s talk about another Korean staple: Bulgogi – pan-fried sweet beef with carrots, onions, green onions, and sesame seeds. You have the option to make it spicy. It is also served with a small bowl of rice and three side dishes.

A similar dish on the menu is Bulgogi Dolsot. Priced at CDN$16.95, it’s a rice dish topped with sweet beef, carrot, bell pepper, onion, green onion, mushroom, sesame seed, served with miso soup.

On the Japanese side of things, Momo offers a variety of rolls and makis. I’ve had the pleasure of trying several of their rolls. The rolls are always fresh and well prepared, and I must say, considering the price they offer, you can’t go wrong.

If you are feeling indecisive or prefer a bit of everything, the Lunch Boxes are excellent options. There are five different boxes to choose from, and I’ve tried the Ton Katsu Box and the Sushi & Sashimi Box. Priced at CDN$17.95 and CDN$21.45 respectively, these lunch boxes provide a generous portion of deliciousness, combining various flavours and textures to satisfy your cravings.

This year, Momo celebrates its 16th anniversary. After the meal, you can get a cup of free slush or sikhye (rice punch) as a sweet gesture to cap off your dining experience.

So, if you’re in South Winnipeg and craving some decent Japanese and Korean grub without breaking the bank, Momo is where it’s at. In addition to dining in, you can order directly from their website or Skipthedishes, Doordash, Ubereats, and Fantuan.
