The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant | Granville Island, Vancouver BC

I travelled to Richmond, BC for Chinese New Year in Feb. 2024.

After dim sum at Sun Sui Wah in Vancouver on a Saturday, we decided to visit Granville Island. The last time I was there was over 10 years ago.

Granville Island is a wonderful place to visit. There’s plenty to see, do, and eat. It offers an array of attractions, from its bustling Public Market teeming with food and craft vendors to its art galleries and outdoor activities like whale watching. Visit the Granville Island website to plan your visit.

We walked around the island for the afternoon. Here is a video of our afternoon on Granville Island.

We began to get hungry. A quick Google search led us to the Sandbar Seafood Restaurant, topping the list with promising reviews and enticing photos.

The restaurant looked unassuming from the outside. To our delight, it’s quite spacious inside and has 3 floors. The hostess desk is on the second floor and they asked us if we wanted to sit on the heated patio. I thought sure why not. Another good decision 😊.

We were treated to a stunning view beneath the Granville Street Bridge, overlooking False Creek and downtown Vancouver.

We ordered the following:

LINGUINE VONGOLE (CDN$29)

fresh manila clams, white wine, chili flakes, cherry tomatoes, parmesan

The pasta had the perfect texture. The sauce was delicious yet not overpowering. And it’s not bad to look at either.

SEAFOOD HOT POT (CDN$33)

fresh fish, prawns, mussels, scallop, market vegetables, coconut red curry broth

This coconut red curry broth is absolutely amazing! It’s incredibly flavourful. I couldn’t put my spoon down even though it was really hot. As a seafood lover, I would order this again in a heartbeat.

SUSHI & SASHIMI PLATTER (CDN$30)

tuna, salmon & hamachi sashimi, tuna, salmon & prawn nigiri, 3 piece Dungeness crab California roll

Seeing sushi on the menu was such a pleasant surprise. Master sushi chef Tsutomu Hoshi started at the Granville Island seafood restaurant since it opened.

The platter was beautifully presented and fresh. I see why the sushi menu items are popular.

CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE CAKE (CDN$12.5)

raspberry coulis

It’s creamy and not overly sweet. Paired with a cup coffee, what a perfect ending to this meal.
