When my friends and I are hit with a dim sum craving in Winnipeg, there’s really only one place we end up at: Kum Koon Garden in Chinatown. It’s the city’s biggest Chinese restaurant and, more importantly, the only spot where you can still experience Hong Kong–style dim sum with roaming pushcarts – though only at lunch. (At dinner, you get the “select-your-order-on-a-sheet” version. Not quite as fun, but still tasty.)
Now, Kum Koon isn’t exactly cheap – don’t go there looking for happy hour deals. What keeps us coming back is the sheer variety: the dim sum selection is extensive, and usually the dishes come out fresh and steaming.
Beyond dim sum, the menu is a heavyweight, boasting over 250 dishes with a strong focus on Cantonese cuisine. Think banquet-style classics, seafood specialties, and dishes made for sharing. It’s also a go-to spot for big occasions – weddings, birthdays, Chinese New Year banquets – you name it.
