Highwater Bar & Eatery: Winnipeg’s Newest Downtown Spot

After checking out House of Ma—which you can read my full review —I noticed the brand new Highwater Bar & Eatery next door was about to open. I quickly put it on my to-try list.

First things first: reservations are highly recommended! Save yourself the stress and lock a table down on OpenTable. If you’re driving, street parking is an option, but there’s also a super convenient parking lot right across the street.

The Atmosphere (And a Minor Upper-Body Workout)

It was pouring rain the night we went, and I have to give you a fair warning: the front door is heavy. I had to give it a full, two-handed pull just to get inside. My friend actually thought it was locked, prompting the staff to lend a hand from the inside.

To be completely honest, I didn’t think it would be that busy on a rainy night. Well, I was wrong. The place was absolutely hopping!

The vibe and decor are effortlessly chic. A long, beautiful bar area showcases rich, earth-toned woodwork. Additionally, as you walk past, you get a great view right into the open kitchen. The seating setup has great flow, combining cozy booths, social high-tops, and standard regular tables beneath rugged, exposed ceiling beams.

The Backdoor

We were seated near the back wall, which is mostly a glass door and large windows looking out toward John Hirsch Pl. We got dinner and a show watching a steady stream of hopeful patrons trying to get in through the back door, only to find out they couldn’t get in. I’m not sure if it was just an off-night or if that door is permanently closed.

The Main Event: The Food

Here is what we ordered:

Calamari & Shrimp: Lightly breaded and perfectly crispy. It was a fantastic, high-energy start to the meal.

Blackened Salmon: Don’t let the “blackened” label scare you off—it isn’t burnt! It’s a beautifully executed dish. The Cajun cream and sweet pineapple salsa pair well with the 6oz Atlantic salmon. Personally, the portion of rice was a bit too heavy for me, but if you love a hearty seafood-and-rice combo, this is a must-order.

Pepper Steak Sizzler: The 6oz Certified Angus Beef flat iron steak was cooked beautifully and packed with flavour from a rich pepper sauce. Bonus points for the fluffy, incredibly tasty garlic toast it comes with.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake: We wrapped up the night with dessert. When the plate first arrived, we wondered why on earth a slice of cake needed such a massive dish. Well, you’ll just have to see it for yourself! The presentation is 100% picture-worthy.

The Verdict

Overall, the staff was incredibly attentive and welcoming. Highwater is a fabulous new addition to the Exchange District, whether you’re looking for a casual hangout spot with friends, a family dinner, or a dynamic date night. If I lived right downtown, I’d probably be a regular here.
