Honestly, it brings a smile to my face when I see people from all ethnic backgrounds and ages chowing down on some good siu mai using chopsticks.
Dim sum in Winnipeg is Cantonese dim sum (港式点心或者饮茶). Although different regions in China have their own versions, dim sum in Canton (Guangdong) province is a unique part of the culture. It is usually paired with tea. Essentially, it’s not just a meal—it’s a lifestyle.
Whether you enjoy this meal with your family every weekend or go as a special treat, you need to know the top spots in town.

The 6 Best Spots for Dim Sum in Winnipeg

Just a quick heads up: these spots aren’t ranked in any particular order. Instead, they are listed by geographic location, starting with Chinatown (downtown Winnipeg) and moving down to South Winnipeg.
Kum Koon Garden | 金冠酒楼
Every time my friends and family mention going for dim sum, KKG is always the top choice. As a matter of fact, it is the biggest Chinese restaurant in town, making it a great place for birthday parties, weddings, Chinese holidays, and business banquets.
During lunch, most people flock there specifically for the dim sum. However, the place gets especially busy on the weekends during non-summer months. To avoid the massive lineups, I highly recommend getting there between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM.
KKG is also the only restaurant in Winnipeg that serves dim sum with traditional pushcarts. Fortunately, they have the massive floor space to pull it off. This setup is incredibly helpful for beginners because there is nothing like seeing the piping hot food right in front of you before you decide if you want it.
On the other hand, if you go at night, there are no pushcarts. You will have to order from a sheet instead, and the selection can be quite limited.
Ultimately, while KKG offers a massive variety of delicious dim sum, keep in mind that it is the most expensive spot in town. Their regular items range from CAD $6.50 to $8.25, while their special dishes are $9.50. And, sadly, there is no happy hour.
Guess what? KKG’s prices are still way more reasonable than what you’d pay in Vancouver. But that’s another story for another post.

Dim Sum Garden | 福满楼
Dim Sum Garden is located right next door to Kum Koon, occupying the space where the old Marigold restaurant used to be. While I don’t visit this spot quite as regularly as its neighbour, it is the ultimate alternative if you are watching your budget.
Let’s be real—not everyone wants to spring for KKG prices. If you are looking for an incredible value, this is the spot to hit. They offer a good selection of classic dim sum dishes, but the real highlight here is their unbeatable happy hour specials.
These are easily the most budget-friendly dim sum prices I have ever seen anywhere in the city (unless they’ve updated their prices very recently):

Sam Po Dim Sum Restaurant | 三宝点心酒楼
Sam Po actually sits in the exact space where Dim Sum Garden used to be. You’ll find it right across from the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural Centre, facing Noodle Express (Sam Po’s sister restaurant that is currently closed).
I hadn’t visited in a long time until very recently. I dropped by on a Sunday with a friend, and let me tell you, the place fills up pretty fast. It is a smaller, much cozier spot where you order directly from a paper sheet. They also have a regular menu if you want to swap out your dim sum for Chinese dishes.
While I still think Kum Koon Garden wears the crown for Vietnamese spring rolls and bean curd wraps, Sam Po completely holds its own with the classics. Their shrimp, pork, and seafood dumplings are all solid, and the portion sizes are actually decent for the price you pay.
Speaking of price, their happy hour deal is pretty sweet and runs all the way from 2:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

Victoria Seafood Restaurant | 香江海鲜酒楼
If you live in South Winnipeg and really do not want to drive all the way to Chinatown, Victoria Seafood is a great choice. I order takeout dim sum from here as well (chilli oil included), and it is still steaming hot by the time it gets home.
Although Victoria doesn’t boast a massive variety like Kum Koon Garden, you can easily find all the traditional classics. Nice portion sizes and delicious flavours are exactly what have kept me going back over the years. They also serve standard Chinese dishes.
The secret is out on this spot, though, so I highly recommend making a reservation for weekend dim sum. Otherwise, you might find yourself waiting in line for a while.
⚠️ Local warning: Mind the front door! It’s heavy, and a strong Winnipeg gust will make you fight for your food before you even sit down.
Do they have a happy hour? You bet!
They run a great special from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM (though keep in mind the discount only applies for dine-in and pickup orders, and their rice noodles are only available before 3:00 PM). They are closed on Tuesdays.

Tang Dynasty Restaurant | 食间
I was told the owners of Tang Dynasty and Victoria Seafood are actually related. No wonder the first time I went there, it immediately reminded me of Victoria—even down to the design of the order sheet.
However, the dim sum is not exactly the same because Tang Dynasty gives its own unique twist to the food. Their dim sum is very tasty, though I can’t quite say the same for some of their regular menu items.
It is a tiny restaurant with only a few tables. Consequently, you might have to wait for a bit if you show up on the weekend.
Unfortunately, they do not have a happy hour.

Southland Restaurant | 新旺角酒楼
I mainly head over to Southland for their regular Chinese food. But, occasionally, I also order some dim sum to go along with the regular dishes. The dim sum is just ok for me but I do know for a fact that it’s a highly popular dim sum spot for Richmond West customers.
Another awesome thing about Southland is that they sell traditional Chinese bakery items like pineapple buns and egg tarts. However, if you are planning on placing any large pastry orders, remember to call them a full day in advance. It is strictly first-come, first-served here, and many times if you show up later in the day, they will be completely sold out.
Happy Hour Times (according to their menu)
- Mon–Thu: 11 AM – 8 PM
- Fri–Sun: 11 AM – 3 PM
- Exclusions: Holidays, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day
The happy hour flat rate is currently $5.60, but keep in mind that only applies to S, M, and L.
Insider Tip
Keep in mind that their weekday hours can be a bit unpredictable – sometimes wrapping up early at 3:00 p.m.
The funny part? As of September 2026, the sign on the outside of the building explicitly advertises the dim sum special running from 2 PM to 5 PM Because the schedule seems to play by its own rules, it is definitely a smart move to give them a quick call ((204) 261-3510) before you head out the door!

I used to go to North Garden for dim sum more frequently, but it’s been years. The dim sum is decent, but the selection is pretty limited with no happy hour. Plus, their steamed dumplings are the most expensive in South Winnipeg.
If dim sum isn’t your main goal, they also serve up standard Chinese dishes.

Dim Sum Kingdom 好天地酒楼
I’ve dined in once and done takeout three times now (including a recent run), and the flavours just don’t quite hit the mark for me compared to other spots. The dumplings are surprisingly small, no chilli oil was included.
They also offer a regular Chinese food menu if dim sum isn’t your thing, and they are conveniently open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Every time I’ve gone to pick up food during lunch, the place was packed—so it obviously has a loyal following.
