Finding authentic, regional Chinese cuisine in Winnipeg isn’t easy. Unlike Toronto or Vancouver, many of our local spots focus on North American-style Chinese food—which has its own wonderful history and tradition.
But whenever my friends and I crave true Cantonese flavours, our top pick is always Sun Fortune Restaurant (新鏞發). Their menu offers a huge selection, including authentic Cantonese dishes, classic Hong Kong-style Western dishes, convenient combo meals, and comforting bowls of congee.
While I can’t promise that every single dish is perfect, the specific items we normally order always satisfy our cravings. Here is a look at what we always get.

This is hands-down the best crispy chicken in Winnipeg. The skin is perfectly crispy, the meat inside is tender, and the Maggi sauce is packed with flavour.

This is a great alternative to Pan Fried Fish Fillet. Pro-tip: You can ask the server for no-shell if you prefer your shrimp peeled!
Minced Pork and Round Beans with Spicy Sauce (Chef’s Suggestions Section)
干燒四季豆
Whenever a group of us go out and everyone gets to pick one dish, this is always my choice. My friends don’t even ask me anymore—they just know! The round beans have a wonderful texture and aren’t mushy at all. They have that amazing wok hei (锅气 – breath of the wok) char, and the savoury minced pork provides a perfect flavour balance.
To be honest, we don’t find it spicy at all.
