Siam Thai Winnipeg: The City’s Only Thai Select-Certified Thai Restaurant

Siam Authentic Thai Cuisine has been around for over twenty years, and it’s probably the Thai restaurant I’ve visited the most.

A friend of mine who moved back to Winnipeg from Vancouver was craving Thai food, so I took him to Siam — his first visit.

I always make a reservation. The restaurant is in Meadowood, a residential area that doesn’t have many restaurants — and it’s the only Thai spot in the area. Not to mention the only Thai restaurant in Winnipeg certified Thai Select by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. That’s a big deal — it means the food, the hospitality and even the atmosphere were inspected and certified by the Thai government.

Unbeknownst to us, the whole strip mall is getting an exterior reno. There are metal fences all around the parking lot, and I have no idea when it’ll be done.

I told him the interior was renovated a couple of years ago, and he commented on how nice it looked.

Drinks

We ordered the Thai Iced Coffee (CAD$5) and Thai Iced Green Tea (CAD$6).

If you like sweet drinks, these are great picks. I prefer everything unsweetened with low or zero sugar, so I asked them to make mine the least sweet possible. It was still too sweet for me 😂. But it tasted good.

Here’s the Blue Boy Iced Red Soda (CAD$6) from a previous visit.

Appetizers

We chose Calamari and Shrimp (CAD$18.99) and Golden Cups (CAD$14.99) to start.

The Calamari and Shrimp was lightly fried in tempura batter — crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and it paired nicely with their sweet chili sauce.

Calamari and Shrimp

The Golden Cups are their speciality. We were told you won’t find them at other Thai restaurants around town.

They are baked cups made from spring roll wrappers, filled with Thai shrimp salad — diced cucumbers, red and green bell peppers and celery, topped off with a shrimp — flavoured with lime juice, cilantro, mint leaves, finely chopped lemongrass and roasted peanuts.

Of course, I asked for the cilantro on the side.

The cups look adorable and taste delicious. All the different textures blend very well — crunchy spring roll wrappers with the softness of the shrimp, and the veggies and herbs give them freshness.

A wonderful appetizer.

Mains

Green Curry with Beef

Simmered in coconut milk and green curry paste, with bamboo shoots, zucchini, red and green bell peppers, and garnished with Thai basil.

You can choose beef, chicken or pork for CAD$17.99, prawns for CAD$19.99, or seafood (calamari, mussels and prawns) for CAD$20.99.

The sauce is very flavourful and goes perfectly with rice. We went with coconut rice at CAD$3.50 per bowl.

Green Curry with Beef

Pad Cha (CAD$19.99)

Deep-fried basa fillet stir-fried in a homemade spicy sauce with chili peppers, lime leaves, bamboo and young green peppercorns.

The fish pieces were a lot bigger than we expected — tender and packed with flavour.

Oh, did I mention – the service was outstanding.

More Dishes I’ve Tried Over the Years

Over the years, I’ve had lunch and dinner there more times than I can count. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of every dish I’ve had, but here’s what’s worth ordering.

I like their:

  • Sour and spicy soup — with chicken (small CAD$13.00 / large CAD$18.00) or prawns (small CAD$15.00 / large CAD$21.00)
  • Thai-style wonton soup (small CAD$13.00 / large CAD$18.00)
  • Shrimp lettuce wrap (CAD$14.99)
  • Golden purses (CAD$12.99)
  • Deep fried spring rolls (4pc CAD$12.00 / 8pc CAD$20.00 / 10pc CAD$24.00)

Never had a bad experience with their curries — green, red, yellow, Massaman and Panang.

Some of their stir-fried dishes are tasty too. One of my friends loves their fried rice.

And, of course, pad Thai — beef, chicken or pork for CAD$16.99, prawns for CAD$18.99. Balanced out by crisp bean sprouts, garlic chives, a squeeze of fresh lime juice on top, and crunchy crushed peanuts. The yummy sauce absorbs completely into the thin rice noodles. The noodles should be soft and chewy.

Many of their items under the salad, curry and stir-fry sections are GF.

Lunch

All their lunch specials come with one vegetarian spring roll and your choice of protein: beef/chicken/pork/tofu for CAD$14.99, prawns for CAD$15.99.

Warning: the spring roll contains cilantro. I learned it the hard way. 😂

I’ve tried their:

  • Green curry with rice — choice of chicken
  • Thai peanut sauce with rice — choice of beef
  • Pad Thai with shrimp

Plenty of good food for a reasonable price.
