It goes without saying that I enjoy visiting restaurants with family and friends. But I always wondered who and where other foodies in Winnipeg were. As I post more food photos on Instagram (IG), I began to notice them. If you follow one, you will find the others fairly quickly because many like and comment on each other’s posts.
Lucia, one of the Winnipeg foodies and I started messaging each other on Instagram and decided to meet for dinner. She chose Little Goat Food & Drink because they had an interesting menu item for Winnipeg’s Chocolate Fest. She told me Reese, another local foodie whom we both follow on IG would also be there. I was delighted.
When I arrived at the restaurant, Lucia and Reese had already been seated. They were told that unfortunately the cocoa-dusted pork belly was sold out. But they didn’t find it to be a problem because both had been there before and knew the restaurant offers a fantastic menu. I’d only been there once for brunch.
The good news was that the restaurant was still able to serve the chocolate cocktail which Lucia ordered. She said it enticed her because they had used a chocolate bourbon and chocolate bitters. It’s a sipper, and quite a lovely one.
Reese’s cocktail, the ‘Eastside,’ is a new Spring addition that is akin to a mojito. Its clean cucumber taste is certainly the choice to cut heavy flavours such as the restaurant’s fried and dairy-based dishes.
For dinner, we each ordered an appetizer and a main, and tasted each other’s dishes.
Lucia ordered the mac and cheese as a starter. She thought it was everything a mac and cheese should be. Crispy bread crumbs on top and a cheesy inside. Every bite really did give her comfort.
I am a sucker for deviled eggs so that’s what I ordered for an appy. To my pleasant surprise, the deviled eggs were served with crispy chicken. What a concept! The eggs were creamy and the crispy chicken provided a wonderful contrast. We all agreed it was lovely.
Reese attends Little Goat with some frequency. Whenever she goes, she tries to get the daily special to diversify her palate, but that evening she opted for two trustworthy options: the French onion soup as a starter and French fried chicken as the main dish. Both, according to her, are rich, indulgent cheese-laden dishes that showcase a true appreciation for the classics.
Lucia expresses that the French onion soup was one of the best she’s ever had, the cheese was ever so stringy!! I don’t like onions and most cheeses so I only tasted the broth which was delicious.
The Choucroute Garnie Lucia chose for the entree was a nice refresher from what she usually eats. The vinegar sauce really gave the meat a punch and the mustard and pickles also really added a nice touch.
I too ordered the French fried chicken. I had been craving fried chicken for a while. Boy, did I get my fried chicken fix that evening. The outside of the chicken was crispy and the inside was unfailingly tender. The pairing with pommes aligot was simply outstanding.
Lucia thinks the fried chicken was by far her favourite dish.
As we were discussing where to go for dessert, we overheard the waiter mentioning the earl grey crème brûlée to another customer. All our eyes lit up and we knew exactly what to do. Since we had decided to go to Snow & Moon Dessert Cafe afterwards, the three of us shared a crème brûlée. Lucia said it was one of her favourites and I tend to agree. The earl grey flavour was very prominent yet not overpowering and the dessert was really smooth and creamy with a crisp caramelized top.
It was such a fun night eating an incredible meal and hanging out with the girls. We look forward to getting together again soon. 🙂
